We had a great visit and tour at Pipestone County Medical Center which is part of the Avera network. Rachel, Jessica and Sandy shared their roles and responsibilities as a part of the leadership team. We took our picture on their helicopter pad and talked with a critical care nurse, in an empty patient room, who was working from home. Below is a journal entry from a young professional of her insight into their careers.

"On Thursday we went to Avera in Pipestone and talked to Jessica, Rachel, and Sandy. Jessica is the chief nursing officer at Avera and she got her bachelors in nursing. She has had many jobs in health care previous to be coming the chief nursing officer. In her current job, she over sees many of the departments in the hospital and does a lot of the risk management. She deals with a lot of patient concerns and complaints, which can be a hard part of her job. Sandy is their chief financial officer, and she started in college going into an Ag banking major, but she later decided that was not for her and got her masters in business administration. She visits with each department and goes over their budgets and also has the responsibility of talking to the board about the finances. Rachel originally went to school for pharmacy, but changed her major to consumer affairs and she is now the HR position at Avera and her responsibility is recruiting staff. Avera has about 190 employees that are PCMC. They are considered critical access, which means they have 25 beds and they are also county owned. Along with that, critical care is their biggest department. Jessica said that there is a place and time for AI, but she hopes that it does not take over."
