Abbie Fey attended SDSU to pursue a degree in wildlife biology. Taxidermy wasn’t on her radar until she met someone in college who owned a taxidermy business. Growing up as a hunter and fisher, this sparked her interest and eventually led to her opening Second Nature Taxidermy in Edgerton.
Abbie attended a six-week class in Wisconsin and explained that developing her skills comes down to practice, repetition, and studying photos to achieve precision. She has worked with many different animals but chooses not to work with porcupines, snakes, or jackalopes.
During her visit, Abbie discussed the licenses and laws surrounding taxidermy, how she prices each piece, and the importance of skills like sewing and painting, as well as selecting the right mounting forms. Her business is primarily marketed through word of mouth, though she also works with a local radio station.
Thank you Abbie for spending the morning with the SWMN CEO young professionals!
